
He was enrolled at the National Theatre School of Denmark at the age of 27. He graduated in 1995. In addition to his appearance in the drama series that was released globally under the name The Killing, he subsequently participated in two other internationally highly acclaimed Danish dramas, Those Who Kill and Borgen III. He also played the lead role in an episode of the BBC drama Sherlock as blackmailer Charles Augustus Magnussen. In the American television show House of Cards, he played the president of Russia. In 2018, he won an International Emmy Award for his performance as the president in Russia on the Danish television drama Herrens Veje. It was shown in the UK in 2019. He has stated that he and his brother initially learned English through studying and listening to the Monty Python songs.
